1.  GWOS OSSE

The Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (JCSDA) has recognized that it is very important that future observing systems be tested by OSSEs.  Currently several OSSEs using the T511NR are being conducted.  The simulation of DWL for the Global Wind Observing Sounder (GWOS) concept is being conducted by Simpson Weather Associates (SWA) and assimilations are being conducted at JCSDA and NCEP.  Related presentations are:

[Simulation of observations for Joint OSSE by NCEP and NESDIS]

1.       Data posted from NASA/NCCS portal

Simulated observations are being posted at the NASA/NCCS portal and made available to the Joint OSSE community.

      A, Simulation of conventional observations

The simulation was completed for the entire Nature Run (NR) period and posted at the NASA/NCCS portal.

      B.  Ozone data are simulated from May 2, 2005 to August 31, 2005.

Further simulations can be completed but we’re currently standing by.

Data are posted at the NASA/NCCS portal.

      C. Simulation of radiance

Radiance data was simulated for the entire Nature Run period of May 2005 to May 2006.  The Nature Run was saved every 3 hours and the simulated observations were produced every 6 hours.  We are working on the observational error.

The simulation foot print used thinning from the NCEP-GSI for the reanalysis.
No cloud. Simulated for the entire selected foot print.
No cloud.  Simulated for the foot print used by the GSI.
With Cloud. Simulated for the entire selected foot print.
Simulated radiance without clouds for the entire 13 month period was posted at the NASA/NCCS portal (http://portal.nccs.nasa.gov/josse/index.pl).
Simulated radiance with cloud is being evaluated.

2.  Assimilation of simulated data
Simulated observations were assimilated to check the simulated data and this assimilation will provide initial conditions for OSSE experiments for any period within the Nature Run.  They are also used to provide boundary conditions for regional OSSEs.

Selected data will be posted at the NASA/NCCS portal.  We need input from other Joint OSSE groups for the selections.

[OSSEs conducted at Environment Canada]

(Summarized by Yves Rochon on May 6, 2011)

Observation system simulations have been conducted at Environment Canada (EC) using the T511NR starting in the summer of 2010. The types and characteristics of the simulated control observation sets, covering 2.5 months each for Summer 2005 and Winter 2005-06, are those of real meteorological observation sets used at EC plus SBUV/2 ozone partial columns from 2008-09 (e.g., includes IASI and AIRS) and transposed to 2005-06.  Simulations were performed using the observation operators of the local 3D-Var-FGAT assimilation system with added consideration of clouds and ice-water content for infrared brightness temperatures. These control observation sets are currently being applied to two observation impact studies.  One is a subtask of the PREMIER Impact study funded by ESA/ESTEC and led by Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany.  This subtask consists of assessing the potential impact of temperature, water vapour and ozone profiles from the PREMIER InfraRed and MicroWave Limb Sounder measurements (IRLS and MWLS; ESA, 2008; Arcioni et al., 2010).  Simulated retrieved PREMIER profiles are spatially thinned at a scale of ~100 km.  MLS-Aura data were also simulated as a source of comparison (e.g., Waters, 1999; Waters et al., 2006; Froidevaux et al., 2006).  Various 3D-Var-FGAT assimilations and medium range forecasting experiments using the Global Environmental Multiscale model (GEM; Charron et al., 2011; Côté et al., 1998) with linearized stratospheric ozone chemistry (LINOZ; McLinden et al., 2000) were conducted and are being evaluated.  The second study is to assess the potential impact of atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) from measurements of the CSA Polar Communications and Weather mission (PCW; Garand and Kroupnik, 2009; CSA, 2009).  Simulations included computed radiances corresponding to the PCW 11 micron channel and three water vapour channels.  Extracted cloud tops corresponding to cloud or water vapor features are based on brightness temperatures matched with temperature profiles.  Eleven micron AMVs above 50°N are extracted from the NR at the cloud top when present and are spatially thinned at a scale of 75 km.  The first 3D-Var-FGAT assimilation with the 11 micron AMVs was launched for the winter period and is being evaluated.  EC personnel involved consist of Yves J. Rochon (PREMIER OSSE lead), Jacek W. Kaminski, Sylvain Heilliette, Louis Garand (PCW OSSE lead), Jian Feng, and Richard Ménard.

[ADM OSSEs at NASA/GSFC/GMAO and KNMI]

Simulation of ADM-Aeolus using LIPAS developed at KNMI is being conducted at NASA/GMAO and OSSEs are being conducted at GMAO.  Limited assimilations and verifications are being conducted at NCEP to set up the GSI codes for ADM-Aeolus.  The OSSE at GMAO focused on January 2006.  The sample data provided to NCEP is from July 1, 2005 to July 3, 2005.

KNMI is working  on the implications of Aeolus' change from burst mode (BM) to continuous mode (CM) operation. This year KNMI will upgrade our Aeolus simulation tool LIPAS to CM. Once it is finished then Will McCarthy may be interested in simulating Aeolus CM and testing the impact in their system.

[OSSEs at NOAA/ESRL]

ESRL contributed to Joint OSSE on diagnostics of the Nature Run and calibration experiments using the NCEP GSI system (Xie et al. 2010).

OSSEs for an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) are in progress at NOAA/ESRL (Xie et al. 2011).  These OSSEs use the Joint OSSE Nature Run.  ESRL delivered a first ever UAS OSSE report to the NOAA/UAS program.  This year they are working on a journal paper collaboration with NCEP.

ESRL is also working on a WISDOM OSSE project, creating imaginary future WISDOM launch sites and generating synthetic WISDOM obs.  The data will be tested in their OSSE system later this year.

[DWL OSSE in Japan]

A group of people who are interested in Space-based lidar was formed.  They are interested in using the Joint OSSE Nature Run and are interested in coordinating with international Joint OSSE activities.  JAXA, MRI, JMA,univ Tokyo  JAMSTEC are involved.

Radiance data simulated at NCEP are copied to JMA.  T511 Nature run 1 degree data in pressure level is also saved in JMA.
